Boater's Safety Course Requirements New Jersey Boat License You now need a NJ Boat License to operate any motorized boat (incuding sailboats with motors) on non-tidal bodies of water in NJ. To get a boat license, you need a Boat Safety Certificate. NJ Boat Safety Certificate You need a Boat Safety Certificate from a NJ State Police approved program to operate any motorized boat (including sailboats with motors) in tidal and non-tidal bodies of water according to the following schedule:
Out of state residents are not exempt from the requirement. NJ will honor a Boat Safety Certificate of another state if you are in New Jersey for less than 90 days. Boat Title Requirements In order to use New Jersey waterways, all boats more than 12 feet in length must be titled at a Regional Service Center or MVC Agency. The only exceptions are: ship's lifeboat, canoe, kayak, inflatable boat, surfboard, rowing scull, racing shell and tender/dinghy used solely for direct transportation between a vessel and shore. If your boat is 12 feet or less, you do not need to title it unless it is powered by an outboard engine. How to Get a Boat Titled Boats must be titled within 10 working days of purchase or are subject to a fine. Titles are only issued at an MVC Agency. You must provide the following information:
